A Slavic language and Orthodox calendar
Bulgarian is a Slavic language written in Cyrillic, and Eastern Orthodox Christianity shapes the yearly rhythm the way it does across most of the Slavic world - Christmas, Easter and name-day celebrations are treated as genuine family occasions, not optional extras. If you have already read about Ukrainian or Russian traditions, much of the calendar logic will feel familiar, even though the details differ from country to country.
