A Romance language among Slavic neighbors
Romanian is a Romance language descended from Latin, part of the Eastern Romance branch - linguistically distinct from the Slavic languages spoken in most surrounding countries. At the 2021 census, ethnic Romanians made up 89.33% of the population, with Hungarian (6.05%) and Roma (3.44%) minorities, and Romanian is a first language for 91.55% of residents. We include Romania in our "Slavic Women" section for its shared Orthodox faith and regional dating culture, not a linguistic claim, and we think that distinction matters to state plainly.
